Photos 15th March 2009

I joined Michael Freeman's walk around the area just north of Welwyn Garden City. 17 of us plus a dog started at Welwyn North station, and took a panoramic hilly mix of crop fields and woods which took us to our lunch stop, The White Horse at Burnham Green. Unfortunately we lost one JWalker who fell ill and had to vanish. Frotunately, despite him being a driver, we managed to shoehorn his passengers into the remaining cars. After a nice lunch in a lovely beer garden we took a longer more roundabout route through woods, horse fields and more crop fields to a church just South of Tewin before returning back to the start point.

To those who I mentioned my gliding, butterfly and other pictures to, if you wish to see them then my main piccies website is at http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/. Gliding -> Aboyne 2007 is perhaps my favourite page.

Walking up the lane away from Welwyn North station before we exit left over the track into the Wood. Walking through Lockleys Wood. The vista that greeted us when we exited Lockleys Wood near the top of a hill. The panorama is to the left of the view of the railway and centres on Foxley Grove. JWalkers walking down the hill from Lockleys Wood.

An Orange Underwing moth and a Comma butterfly enjoying the spring sunshine. The former apparently is not very common so that was a scoop. Another view across the wood lined valley. Harmergreen Wood. Closeup shot of small flowers on the edge of Harmergreen Wood. Burnham Green, and lunch, ahead.

A spectacular ivy coated dead tree with gnarly branches. Looking north towards Datchworth as we approach the lucnch stop. Wispy cumulus and cirrus clouds floating by above us contually changing shape. JWalkers crossing the last field to Burnham Green. Back entrance to the pub beer garden ahead.

Microlight passing overhead. Exiting The White Horse via the front door... ...And down the lane to the side back into the countryside. As a biker this twisty road looks very appealing to me! No! Don't eat our fearless leader! Michael finds a new friend.

Emerging into the open by Queen Hoo Hall (?). A windy trail across another field. The smallest JWalker posing for the camera. Bushes that look to me like a buffalo and a camel? Looking across a huge field near Tewin. More paddocks in the Tewin area.

The sorry sight of burnt out wrecks as we emerge from Lamb Dell Wood. The church near Tewin. Anyone got any clue what this is? One of two spotted in a field called the Dawley Plantation. Final views as we approach Digswell and the end of the walk.
